This song was similarly sung by at least two generations on my mother’s side. For some reason, I always assumed it was a Hank Williams song.
However, I doublechecked just now (http://tinyurl.com/2awbwl). It was written by future-governor Jimmy Davis, and announced to be the favorite song of King George VI. Which is nice, but it does sound best delivered to littler royalty, though, doesn’t it?
